The station
of waste water purification to Al-Bireh
City
|
|
The
municipality carried out
many vital projects in the
city but the most important
one is the purification
station of waste water
because of its importance
for the city and the
surrounding areas, and the
need for such a station.
The station is an example of
the technical development
which appears in the network
of sewerage, and the
sewerage network is
considered the most
integrated and up to date
project in Palestine.
The station was implemented
through the sewerage network
by the engineering
department I the
municipality with
Palestinian hands and purely
Palestinian effort and
modern techniques. The
project aims to serve the
citizens, so it is their
responsibility to cooperate
in maintaining it and keep
paying the fees that assure
the continuity of the
project.
After 29 months of
construction the first flow
of water flown to the
purification station in the
city on 15 May 2000, the
population the station
serves is 50000. the
sewerage network was first
started in 1958, 60% of the
contaminations are connected
to the network. The waste
water arrives to the station
by two pipelines.
The waste water comes from :
houses, stores and
factories. The house waste
water looks like clouds,
grey with yellow coloring,
contains organic substances
and dangerous materials,
these organic substances are
sulfuric protein and
carbohydrates, that gives a
very bad smell, this water
consists of 2/3 organic
substances and 1/3
non-organic substances. |
|
|
The
treatment of waste water go
into two stages: physical
purification and biological
purification, in addition to
purification by ultraviolet
rays. Non-organic substances
are not purified
biologically and can cause
damage to the network, so to
prevent that first treatment
is used: two nets with
cylindrical chains orbit
with a board that has teeth
15mm width which get rid of
the large waste by an
automatic hock, then the
waste reaches to the solid
waste place, then it is
ventilated, the big parts of
sand etc.. must be get rid
of.
The project is an example to
the out world and is the
first in Palestine, it cost
35 DM.
Operating the station costs
a lot of money because it
needs workers, maintenance
and transportation, and this
should be covered by the
fees, these fees should
encourage people to use
water economically, for
example, rain water should
be used in cleaning and
washing up in addition to
irrigation.
